Pay It Forward – Fulfill a Dream

There’s a tremendous power in giving, and on Friday, April 28th, you can discover it for yourself in a whole new way.

Anthropologists, psychologists, and economists have all spent careers contributing research and data to answer the ‘why’ behind what is actually a fairly complex and essential part of the human experience: giving. Humans give out of love, to feel good, to strengthen bonds with those around them, and to give back to the community and the world. A psychologist will tell you that studies show that it’s the giver and not the receiver who typically gets the most benefit psychologically out of a giving interaction. An economist might say that philanthropists give because they want to be the driving force behind a change in the world.

Whatever the case, you don’t need to be an economist or a psychologist to understand giving, and you don’t need to be a millionaire to start giving yourself. Pay It Forward Day is the one day a year where you’re encouraged to give for giving’s sake, with no expectation to get anything in return and no strings attached. That means paying for the meal of the person behind you at a drive through, or donating some money to your favorite charity, or if you’re low on cash spending time with the elderly at your nearest retirement home. There are more than 80 countries participating in #PayItForwardDay and there are an infinite amount of ways to get involved. You just need to take a minute, think of what you could do differently, how you could give back or help those around you.

Throughout everyday life, people can attest to the fact that the more you give, the more you begin to realize that the act of giving goes beyond Christmas and birthdays, beyond weddings and graduations. It turns out that the only gift that keeps on giving is, well, giving. And the reason for that is that giving usually begets more giving, establishing a sort of positive feedback loop. You give. The receiver is happy, surprised and wants to feel the gratification of giving themselves, so they give… and the cycle continues. It sounds simple, but a process like this can change lives.

Make this Pay It Forward Day different and pass on the gift of fulfillment. Don’t get your friend a bottle of Burnett’s that you know you’ll just end up splitting later. Don’t get your loved one the same old gifts you’d usually get. Give them the gift of excitement, discovery, adventure, possibly an adrenaline rush. Help them fulfill a lifelong goal, or just kick them in the right direction :)

Here at BucketList, we know that you’re not average person, so we put together a list of extraordinary experiences that any receiver is sure to remember, cherish and check off their bucketlist. Who knows, they might even pass on a new experience on to someone else.
